COWALFEST
From: Friday 03 October 2008 To: Sunday 12 October 2008
Cowalfest is a unique and vibrant 10-day festival which combines arts and walking with some of the finest scenery Scotland has to offer. The programme includes guided walks, arts exhibitions, and cultural/social events that celebrate the stunning local landscape and natural environment of the lovely Cowal Peninsula, situated just over an hours drive from Glasgow.
The programme of guided walks to suit all ages and abilities will take you to magical places, hidden glens and tumbling waterfalls. Many of the walks are partly or wholly within Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Not to be missed is the selection of walks aimed at uncovering the hidden gems within Benmore Botanic Garden, a 150-acre botanical paradise, and a great place to spot the elusive red squirrel. There are also a number of fascinating themed walks which enable you to discover Cowal's past, such as following in the footsteps of the area's whisky smugglers. Shakespeare fans should sign up for the MacBeth walk, full of intrigue and dark magic!
During the festival, shops, bars, restaurants, churches and even post offices throughout Cowal are transformed into a unique living art gallery. This year, the chosen theme is Cowal In Focus, and on display will be a tremendous array of archive photographs, recalling life in the area in previous generations. There's also a film feature, giving you the change to see contemporary and classic movies in a variety of locations, including the world famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar.
