EDINBURGH'S CHRISTMAS
From: Thursday 22 November 2007 To: Sunday 30 December 2007
At Christmas, Edinburgh Sparkles.... 2007 was a success..again...I wonder what 2008 will bring?
In winter, Edinburgh, one of Europe's most romantic cities, sparkles with over a month of festivities. Bursting to life with fireworks, markets, Christmas lights, entertainment and the iconic Winter Wonderland, Edinburgh's Christmas draws thousands of locals and visitors every year.
The festivities are launched on Light Night, Thursday 22 November, when a Christmas tree, gifted to the city by the people of Hordaland, Norway is lit up and 200,000 lights all over the city are switched on creating the impressive, sparkling cityscape for which Edinburgh's Christmas is now renowned. The evening festivities continue with an ice show and fireworks to launch the ice rink, Winter Wonderland and the much loved Big Wheel, which, standing at 33m tall, offers unrivalled views of twinkling Edinburgh. The gluhwein flows as the German and Scottish markets also open for business on this night. For the first time, this year Princes Street Gardens will also host a dedicated food market selling quality produce, such as venison, oatcakes and liqueurs, from all over Scotland.
As the build up to Christmas continues, visitors can enjoy an exciting range of activities across the city such as the Norwegian Advent Carol Concert at St Giles' Cathedral, an outdoor Nativity Carol Service and Green Christmas at the Royal Botanic Gardens. An exciting new event will be taking place this year on the 30 November in celebration of St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The new event will add a Scottish flavour to the Christmas celebrations and is set to be a well received addition to the festivities. Over the weekend of the 15th -16th December, children will delight in the return of the annual Santa Weekend. The weekend not only marks the arrival of Santa and his reindeer to Princes Street Gardens, but also includes the famous Santa Run around Princes Street Gardens on 16 December. The Great Scottish Santa Run sees thousands of Edinburgh locals and visitors dress up as Santa Clause and run, clamber and skip along the the1.5km course to raise money for 'When You Wish Upon a Star', a charity for children with terminal illness.
Edinburgh's Christmas is a celebration like no other. The beautiful city sparkles and Christmas becomes the perfect time to visit Edinburgh for romantic getaways, cultural explorations, or just to soak up the atmosphere while Christmas Shopping. Edinburgh's Christmas festival enriches the festive season and adds spirit, excitement and sparkle to the darker months of the year.
